Program Description
This workshop will explore social learning concepts in Core Curriculum Standards, review inferential skills, and examine strategies to build understanding of intention, behavior, & effect. It will cover the importance of perspective, emotions and flexibility, as well as ways to support development of conversation.
Learning Outcomes
Participants will:
- Explain why silence is an important therapeutic tool.
- Create 2 visual supports that could be used with students with whom they work and explain why they are necessary.
- Define jump cuts and describe how they relate to social learning.
- Support via research why using materials that move, such as a YouTube video, makes sense.
- Explain why interjections are so important and how to work on them with students.
- Demonstrate how to use a conversation map with a student with whom they work.

Anna Vagin, PhD, is a licensed speech/language pathologist with over 30 years experience. In her private practice in Marin County, California, she provides individual sessions and social learning groups to children, young adults, and their families. Her particular interest is using media to support social thinking in students with diagnoses such as ASD, ADHD, NVLD, Language Disorder, Anxiety Disorder, Social Communication Disorder or Twice Exceptional. She provides consultation to parents and schools, and is a frequent speaker in the US and Canada on topics related to social cognition. She is the author of Movie Time Social Learning (2012) and YouCue Feelings: Using Online Videos for Social Learning (2015).
