Program:
This workshop will describe principles and methods to establish a new motor pattern that extinguishes the old distorted pattern using a retracted “R” as an example. Opportunities to hear and produce each physiological component will be provided. Treatment principles and activities will also be described and practiced.
Time Ordered Agenda:

Objectives:
Following this presentation, participants will be able to:
- state a major principle used in selecting a target motor pattern that extinguishes the old motor pattern and describe how this principle facilitates carryover to conversational speech;
- identify 5 different “R” distortions based on the articulatory physiology and describe how to distinguish and quantify approximations of the target phoneme during shaping;
- describe variables to incorporate into scaffolding activities that increase awareness of speech sound occurrences, self-correction, and prevention of errors to promote carryover to vocalic “R.”
About our Speaker:
Dr. Kobara-Mates serves as clinical faculty at Northwestern University's Center for Audiology, Speech, Language, and Learning in Evanston, Illinois, where she supervises graduate students in the evaluation and treatment of children with speech disorders. Prior to supervising, Mindy has over 30 years of experience specializing in the speech of children and adults with hearing loss, speech sound disorders, and apraxia.
This course is offered for .2 ASHA CEUs (intermediate level, professional area). Available for partial Credit: N
An annual ASHA CE Registry fee is required to register ASHA CEUs. ASHA CE Registry fees are paid directly to the ASHA National Office. To register CEUs with ASHA, you must complete a CE participant form, turn it in at the time of the activity, and pay the ASHA CE Registry fee. ASHA CEUs are awarded ONLY AFTER receipt of the CE Participant Form AND payment of the Registry fee.
