Program:
This workshop will describe the neurological effects of poverty on young children. It will address the need for strong community and professional support of parent-child engagement, since these social interactions serve as a powerful intervention to overcome developmental barriers related to poverty.

Objectives:
Following this presentation, participants will be able to:
- Identify factors associated with neurological development which may impact language and cognitive processing of young children who are exposed to poverty.
- List three early adverse childhood experiences (ACES), which may occur early in a child’s life, which may increase the likelihood of developmental delays in children.
- Describe Beginning with Babble, a Mobile App that stimulates parents’ language engagement with babies and toddlers, as well as other language based strategies to facilitate language development in young children.
About our Speaker:
Nancy has worked in the field for over 25 years with most of her work servicing children aged Birth-6 years of age. Nancy worked as an SLP for Wheeling EC Center for over 20 years. She currently works in the EI system, which she has done for the past 12 years. Nancy currently teaches courses in special education and early childhood language as adjunct faculty at National Louis University. She is a member of the advisory board Department of Speech Language Pathology at Midwestern University. John Lybolt holds a Ph.D. in Communication Sciences from Northwestern University and has extensive experience in research, teaching and presenting school-based teaching techniques, programs, in-services and curricula development, and currently sits on the Lurie Children’s Hospital institutional research review board. Dr. Lybolt wrote the Leap preschool curriculum (Building Language through the Year, 2006, Brookes Publishing), which has been used in public and charter schools in Chicago. He wrote the initial versions of Leap Learning Systems’ Language for Scholars, LET, Language Through Science, LASER, TLC and VIP programs.

An annual ASHA CE Registry fee is required to register ASHA CEUs. ASHA CE Registry fees are paid directly to the ASHA National Office. To register CEUs with ASHA, you must complete a CE participant form, turn it in at the time of the activity, and pay the ASHA CE Registry fee. ASHA CEUs are awarded ONLY AFTER receipt of the CE Participant Form AND payment of the Registry fee.
Program Completion Requirements:
Participants are expected to be present for the entire program. Individuals who are not present for the full program will not be recommended for ASHA CEUs. No partial credit will be provided.
